Service, Clean, And Paint A Retro Refrigerator

If you are redecorating your kitchen with a vintage theme, a retro refrigerator that you scored at a local auction will make a nice addition. The appliance may need to be serviced, cleaned, and painted prior to being used, especially if the refrigerator wasn't used regularly for several years.

Have The Unit's Cooling Capability Checked Out

Older refrigerators typically require freon to regulate a cool temperature that will be adequate for preserving perishable foods. Hire a technician to have the appliance's coolant capability checked out. During the appointment, the refrigerator should be placed on a level surface and the unit needs to be plugged in.

After adjusting the temperature dials, a technician will be able to determine if more of the refrigerant is needed. During your service appointment, request that the unit's temperature gauge and lighting system also be inspected. If the refrigerator is lacking any of its hardware or drawers, you may receive recommendations concerning dealers or appliance shops that have these parts in stock.

Clean The Inside And Outside

If the refrigerator has a filthy surface, unplug the appliance and move it outdoors onto your home's front porch or patio. Use a hose to rinse grime from the front, sides, and top of the refrigerator. Chlorine bleach that has been diluted in water can be applied to a sponge before disinfecting the surface of the refrigerator.

Open the refrigerator door and remove food bins and trays. Set these items on a flat surface and rinse them well with water. Use a damp sponge to wipe off each interior surface. Disinfect the inside of the refrigerator with diluted bleach. Leave the refrigerator's door open while you wait for the interior to dry. Afterward, replace the food bins and trays.

Spruce Up The Color Of The Unit

If the unit was previously painted and now has a dull surface, purchase some enamel paint to provide the appliance with a fresh exterior. You can choose the original color of paint or one that is different and that will match the color of the appliances and dinette table that is in your kitchen. Before applying the paint, use duct or masking tape to conceal metal trim and the refrigerator's handle.

Spray the paint across all sides of the refrigerator. A light coating of paint should be applied initially so that you can see how dark the paint will appear on the unit and so that the paint does not run down the sides of the refrigerator. After the paint job is complete, wait a full day before moving the refrigerator into your home, plugging it in, and storing your groceries inside of the appliance.
