Modern Automatic Clothes Dryer Problems & Common Causes

You picked up that beautiful new automatic clothes dryer when it first came out because it offered an array of cool, modern features. After a few years of use, those awesome features that allured you to buy your new dryer start to show signs of problems. Here are a few of those problems and the common causes.

Problem: The dryer will not automatically kick off when clothes are dry.

The modern automatic clothes dryer has this cool feature where it automatically shuts down when the dryer "senses" that the clothes inside are dried to your preferences. If your dryer continuously runs when it is on its automatic setting, it means the sensors that tell the dryer to shut down because the clothes are dry have failed. The moisture sensors are located on the back of the drum, and they may have to be replaced. Unless you are comfortable with pretty much disassembling your entire dryer, this is a task best left to a dryer repair service.

Problem: The dryer will not come on when you close the door.

Many modern dryers have a door that is designed to be reversible, which means you can basically take out a few screws and attach the hinge on either side so the door opens one way or the other. As convenient as this may be to you as a user, the ability to swap the opening direction of the door can also mean you inadvertently throw off the sensors on the door in the process. These sensors are designed to detect when the door is closed, so if they get knocked out of whack when you are reversing the door, the dryer will not start. Grab a flashlight and check to make sure you haven't agitated, covered, or otherwise disrupted the sensors.

Problem: The dryer's extended tumble feature stops working.

Extended tumble allows you to put your clothes in the dryer before you go to bed and have the dryer occasionally tumble the clothing with a zap of heat so they will not settle and wrinkle in the drum before morning. If you set the automatic tumble feature on the control panel but the function fails to happen, there is likely a problem with the control panel itself. The digitized control panel has a connected motherboard that holds a series of relays and transmitting wires; if one of the features you hit doesn't happen, messages are failing to get to the primary controller.
