Repairing Your Refrigerator When It Won't Cool: What You Can Do

Your refrigerator is a necessary appliance and one that you will notice and miss terribly when it stops working suddenly. The last thing you want is for your food to spoil, or for anything in your freezer to thaw out. This is especially true if you stock up and have a full freezer/refrigerator. If you notice that your refrigerator isn't as cool as it should be, there are things you can do that will help. Read on for tips to repair your refrigerator if it isn't working properly.

Check for Power

If you open the refrigerator and the light doesn't turn on at all, the power could have gotten turned off somehow. Some companies, like D-3/A-OK Appliance Service Inc., know how frustrating these sort of things can be. There is a switch on your refrigerator, and it could have been switched to the "off" position. If this isn't the case, check that it is still plugged in and that the power has not been turned off at the fuse, such as from a blown fuse. If this isn't the case, you can check that the outlet didn't go bad where the refrigerator is plugged into, or that the power cord didn't go bad on your refrigerator.

Test the Door Seal

Your door seal could be part of your problem. If you have power to your refrigerator, but your food isn't cool, the issue may be the door seal. Check first that your door is closing all of the way. If it is, check that the seal is still providing an air-tight seal for your appliance. If you aren't getting an air-tight seal, it could cause your refrigerator to get warm inside, leaving you with thawed ice cream or warm milk. To test the door seal, you can place a piece of paper in the door. Leave enough of the paper to allow you to pull it out once the door is closed. Close the door and try to pull out the paper. If it pulls out easily, you don't have a good seal. If it is difficult to pull out, your seal is just fine. Replacing the door seal is just a matter of finding a replacement door seal for your refrigerator, removing the old seal and replacing it with a new one.

Clean the Coils

The coils on the back of the refrigerator may have accumulated dust and dander over the years. You may be surprised at how much is on your coils, which can make it harder for your refrigerator to stay cool. Pull out your refrigerator from it's space and clean the coils on the backside using a shop vacuum. Leave your refrigerator out for a few hours to see if it cools at all. If not, you may have a bigger issue with your appliance and should call an appliance repairman for help.

Your refrigerator is an important appliance in your home and it should be cared for to lengthen its life. If have an issue with this or any other appliance in your home, call an appliance repairman to take a look at your appliance and make the repair.
